WoW Patch 3.0

October 13th, 2008 omo

In light of the new expansion for World of Warcraft, Blizzard will roll out the new in-game mechanics change in a patch tomorrow. It will totally wreck havoc to what my character is currently being/doing/wearing. But not as bad as some others.

A few talent trees for my own reference:

Titan’s grip.

PVP

Sudden Death.

Experience WoW Raiding Without Playing WoW

May 13th, 2008 omo

So everyone knows that World of Warcraft can be addictive and carries a monthly fee to play, plus the sheer number of hours the typical player sinks into the game. It’s daunting. Furthermore, the end-game raids that really lock up your WoW-addict friend’s time is where the large portion of the action is.

If you want to get a taste, you can play this little flash game developed by WoW raiders to teach people one aspect of a boss encounter.

Of course, the simulator is not the real thing, and does not at all resemble the real thing, but it gives you an idea of this mini game part of one fight.

If you want to know how this all plays into the actual Teron Gorefiend fight, read this wiki entry.

WoW: Zul’Aman; Chicken feet and other trollish things

January 28th, 2008 omo

There are fewer joys when you pick out a select few SSC/TK raiders, put them together with some ZA experience, and 1-shot Hex Lord when a third of the raid is noob to him, and no one has downed him before.

It also helped we had the right class composition and some lucky class calls. I think if we got the warlock call more than twice we would’ve wiped.

Even more silly still is taking down Zul’Jin to phase 4 during a “let’s look and see” attempt. Phase 3 kicked our asses, but I think that’s because the healers were holding back. The one rogue we had was good DPS but he really needs another couple thousand health if he wants to live long enough to do actual damage.

For two weeks in a row now Ming has dragged me to eat at Jade Isle, this old-timer canton dimsum place in Scotch Plains. I recommended it to him a long time ago and it’s only recently he realizes that it is one of the few places where he can still get beef tendons and other random cow parts. It seems that the New York City eateries are phasing those dishes out for some reason. But what’s even more amazing is the Cantonese style chicken feet. Best I’ve had easily anywhere. Of course, it’s still chicken feet, so YMMV.

WoW: Lootrank

January 25th, 2008 omo

Lootrank.

Premise: since your character has a wide variety of statistics to convert all of that number into a simple, comparable (damage per second) there needs be a way to optimize gear selection based on uniform criteria. That said people use different criteria and we need a tool to apply the personalized criterion uniformly.

Solution: Lootrank is a web application where you can input numbers and assign them to each in-game statistic. The system then pulls the information on loot from WoW gear databases and rank them for you.

Features: it uses wowhead for gear data, which is good. It allows for templates, as in the values you use to populate lootrank is saved in the URL, so you can link it easily.

Downsides: UI is pretty bare. Forum is lacking. Lack of templates, but people do link some good ones across other forums like EJ. It would make my life easier if you can apply key conversion factors rather than straight up number assignments (like, for example, how crit relates to ap relates to hit, as a ratio, rather than numbers that propagates itself. At least we know 1 str is 2 to 2.2 ap, basics like that). Basically it can be more user friendly.

Comments: Great site, but AEP is still a fool’s game and only a general guideline to gear outfitting as it does not take into account of how stats crossplays with each other.

My fury warrior template here. The numbers are calculated using the basic presumptions and formulas (more like CEP):

1 Str = 2.07 AP (I get kings close to half the time I raid, actually; should get might more often)
1% to crit = 33 agi = 23 crit rating (taking into account of kings)
1% crit is worth 13 Str (obviously I’m not crit capped). This value will change on my total itemization value (basically how twinked out I am). The more phat lewt I get the higher I will rate crit over strength, as it is a multiplier of damage where as AP/Str is linearly added.
170 armor penetration is approximately worth 1% damage increase (on an average sundered mob) which I equal to 1% crit. This value will scale higher as my total itemization value increases. This value is also very “ballpark” and situational as you know.
1% haste is = 16 haste rating, which is worth 0.5% of damage increase (basically, because it doesn’t really increase my special attack speed with exception of heroic strikes), which I equal to 0.5% crit.
1% to hit = 16 hit rating, which is worth 0.5% of damage increase (obviously I’m above the 2h hit cap and below 24% total miss), which I equal to 0.4% crit. This value will scale down as my total itemization value increases, but it is still a key stat to at least hit a comfortable level, like stamina.
1% to dodge/parry reduction = 16 expertise rating, which is worth 0.9% of damage increase, which I equal to 0.9% crit. I’m not capped, obviously. And nothing suck more when your bloodthirst gets dodged.

The equvalent values are:
207 AP = 100 Str = 254 agi = 177 crit = 1368 ArP = 257 haste = 321 hit = 143 expertise

Inversed, we get the weighted score for lootrank:
100 Str, 39.3 Agi, 48.3 AP, 56.5 crit, 31.2 hit, 7.3 ArP, 38.9 haste, 69.9 expertise

Double check my math if you can, please.
