Experience WoW Raiding Without Playing WoW

May 13th, 2008 omo

So everyone knows that World of Warcraft can be addictive and carries a monthly fee to play, plus the sheer number of hours the typical player sinks into the game. It’s daunting. Furthermore, the end-game raids that really lock up your WoW-addict friend’s time is where the large portion of the action is.

If you want to get a taste, you can play this little flash game developed by WoW raiders to teach people one aspect of a boss encounter.

Of course, the simulator is not the real thing, and does not at all resemble the real thing, but it gives you an idea of this mini game part of one fight.

If you want to know how this all plays into the actual Teron Gorefiend fight, read this wiki entry.

Persona 3

May 6th, 2008 omo

I’ve been playing the new FES version of Persona 3 that came out on Earth Day.

It’s a lot of fun. Some called this game the best console RPG of 2007, and I can see why.

It also scratches my dating sim itch the right way. The combat system is pretty good but not as orgasmic as, say, Grandia 2′s. The persona switching mechanism makes it a little cheap. I wish there’s some way to look at the spells description easily since I have no idea what Rakudnatasgsklerwhelkjhg means when it’s listed in the Persona view. I would have to go to a spell casting widget to see the descriptions, and that’s just not possible in combat, and PITA when you’re not in combat.

Let alone seeing what personas I need for which fusion skill. guh.

But that’s not my real disappointment. This is one of those games I am actually tempted to import. The voice acting on the Atlus release is good enough, and they even kept the honorifics and the casual nicknames (“Yuka-tan~”). It sounds weird, but it’s actually alright I imagine. However, the US release doesn’t have the Japanese, all-star track. Mamiko Noto, Yukarin,

Now it’s just a matter of finding the time to clock in the necessary hour. Motivation is not a problem. This is a good RPG.

Economics Is Nuts

May 1st, 2008 omo

So I quote from the NYT:

“People say that if consumers are down to their last $50, the last three things they’ll buy are milk, eggs and video games,” said Colin Sebastian, a video game industry analyst with Lazard Capital Markets.

What’s crazy is that about 70% of the US’s GNP comes from consumer spending. Now add the two together. Of course, it’s mostly not retail, but you get the idea.

And if you didn’t know, US’s GNP is about 4 times higher than the second highest GNP nation in the world, Japan.

Getting Ready for GTA4

April 28th, 2008 omo

Few things more suited to prep for GTA4 than stealing copies of it. And it’s not even piracy.

Here’s a video for your non-gaming parents. Along with the “Don’t let your kids play GTA4!” deal from National Institute on the Media and Family & ESRB.

And read a glowing review of it from Liberty City Times.

This is nuts. I might even buy a copy. I got my copy of Persona 3 FES just Saturday and I haven’t had the time to even open it. Guh.

Randomness

April 25th, 2008 omo

So this blog is like, turning into a links blog. I guess that just shows how busy I am lately \o\

1. Toothache sucks. So does seasonal allergy

2. The OGC is funny.

3. Games die as bad businesses ruins things–a pretty little disgusting story.

Regarding #3, it happens in all kinds of other businesses, but in the gaming industry it seems ripe for abuse, and it also happens a little more often than I’d like. I guess the industry is also more high profile than other similar to it, so you hear about it more.

But while you can burn money and win lawsuits that way, in reality it doesn’t always have to be. In Majesco’s case you might be ending up hitting a hollow pinata anyways, given how the company did today… Having original IP is a big deal in this case.
